Week 11 Term 2 2020

This has been a hard week I have started introducing the kia kaha unit as we have been having a few issues within the school with the new enrolments we have had.
This is going well, I need to have more patience and let tamariki make decisions on their time not when I want them too.
I introduced a new idea to the class, the purple card.  This card is for when students feel frustrated about something in class and they feel they need time to adjust their mood or thinking, they can grab a purple card and go and sit outside or in the corridor.  I will go out and see them, to see how I can help, or they can come in when they are ready.  If I suggest to someone that they need a purple card that means I need a break and I will come out and see you in a couple of minutes.
Today I suggested a purple card to one boy twice throughout the day.  I think this worked really well as I didn't raise my voice and I was able to calmly have a conversation with him, he understood and was able to join the class again.
Two girls voluntarily used purple cards today as they got frustrated with a group activity.  When they came back in I talked with the group, we were able to have a conversation and fix the problem within the group.

2020

This is my first post for 2020 not very good, I need to commit to posting to my blog every week.
Now that we have school closures and we are all in lockdown I am going to try and post to my blog more frequently.

This is day one of the lockdown I have made contact with three students via email and checked their work given feedback through email.

My goal tomorrow is to make a video to post on our school Facebook page.

My professional goal is to start my inquiry for the year,

Epro8

I had the pleasure this year of taking a group of 4 tamariki from my classroom to participate in
 epro 8.
Watching tamariki competing against each other in these technologies and engineering challenges.

The questions I asked myself were:

  • Have I prepared them enough to face these challenges?
  • What else could I have done to prepare them more?
  • What would I do differently next year?
  • Are they aware or know all the language in the challenges
My tamariki handled themselves well.  I was so proud of them as a teacher they showed perseverance
they did not achieve some of the challenges, they didn't give up, they kept trying and enjoyed themselves.  They had so much fun they wanted to stay and watch the next lot of tamariki.  So we stayed.

Getting started with STEM

Getting started with stem

There is some good information and things on this site I am going to use this to set my class up properly for 2020.  I have done a few STEM activities on reflection I was not prepared properly so not many students were successful.
