Epro8

I had the pleasure this year of taking a group of 4 tamariki from my classroom to participate in
 epro 8.
Watching tamariki competing against each other in these technologies and engineering challenges.

The questions I asked myself were:

  • Have I prepared them enough to face these challenges?
  • What else could I have done to prepare them more?
  • What would I do differently next year?
  • Are they aware or know all the language in the challenges
My tamariki handled themselves well.  I was so proud of them as a teacher they showed perseverance
they did not achieve some of the challenges, they didn't give up, they kept trying and enjoyed themselves.  They had so much fun they wanted to stay and watch the next lot of tamariki.  So we stayed.

Getting started with STEM

Getting started with stem

There is some good information and things on this site I am going to use this to set my class up properly for 2020.  I have done a few STEM activities on reflection I was not prepared properly so not many students were successful.

DFI Week 9

The time has gone really fast and I have learnt a lot of new things to help me with my teaching.
I was in a big panic because we were sitting our google exam.  The test was hard but not as hard as I thought.  Although I didn't pass I am going to resit it in two weeks.
My advice to teachers that are going to do DFI is that you stay focused through out the day to the presenters because the exam covers everything that they have presented.

Another observation I have made is that the tamariki of Northland are so lucky to have awesome teachers that are dedicated to the well being of their students and are always looking for ways to inspire children to be the best they can be.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Share within the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

DFI week 8

What did I Learn

Computational Thinking

Our focus this week was computational thinking.
Involves taking things apart and putting them back together again.

I learnt today to get your tamariki empowered you have to trust that they are doing what they are meant to be doing.
  • Introduce one device at time
  • Allow students to explore and try new things in their learning
  • Give students choices

Computational thinking is a set of problem-solving methods that involve expressing problems and their solutions in ways that a computer could execute.

Children need to know how to read and write code

The new DT Curriculum is “about teaching children how to design their own digital solutions and become creators of, not just users of, digital technologies, to prepare them for the modern workforce.

Chris Hipkins, 2018
Create Share
Our task after lunch was to Create a digital story to reflectively answer either of the following questions
We didn't quite get finished or answer the questions. I can see how this would inspire children to write their own stories using scratch.

DFI 7

DFI week 7 today was very hands on together we made a map from a spread sheet of the favourite  place we had been too.

Then we used a spread sheet to gather statistical data from a blog then we added them to our blog.
We also used google forms to set them up
What did I learn that increased my understanding of being connected with Manaiakalani’s kaupapa and pedagogy?
I have learnt that the Learn Create Share is very powerful for students learning, I knew it was good but now really believe it is important for students to be able to share their work with their whanau and get feedback from others not just their teacher.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
When I go home I need to keep tutuing with things that I learn so that it stays embedded in my brain.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
I will be using google forms a lot in my class. As a warm up maths activity/ making a form to answer comprehension questions

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

By using google forms in my class I can see how it will cut back on marking time, I will get instant feed back on what students know, what they got wrong which will help me to able to see what they need to learn.

DFI 6

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Share within the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

What I have I learnt this week on DFI

Make all learning visible to students have WALTS and success criteria with every lesson so children know how they can be successful.

Have a multi modal so that all resources are in the one place so students don’t have to go to different places all they need for their in the one place.

What is visible learning where will it take us too:
Video

Digital learning does have blocks:
  • Slow internet
  • You haven’t shared it with the right people

If we collaborate together and make our planning sites available to colleagues this will help to cut down on planning time.
Kyle shared a good reading site getepic.com  lesson plans and templates are there as well, and it is multi modal
Sunshine Classics is free to Manaiakahlani Schools

Found an awesome site from Panmurebridge with some good resources     Panmurebridge classroom site Writing Rubric  Dictionary  Teach your monster to read
Some people shared there sites with us and explained how their site works we have some very clever teachers in Taitokerau thank you for being brave and presenting your site to us.

I did a lot of work on my site to make it easier for my students to find their work on our class site.

Week 5 DFI

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Share within the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

What I really enjoy about coming each week is that everybody helps each other.  If you miss one little snippet someone is always willing to help or show you what you have missed.
All the resources that are shared by other teachers within the Manaiakalani Trust

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I had a conversation with two principals we talked about is there a way we could lighten our work load.
If teachers within the cluster got into year groups we could all plan together and share our resources so that we are not wasting valuable time looking for resources.

What a lot of people have found that the biggest thing that is hindering  our tutu time is time trying to work it all in with your planning and home life/ school life.

We had a special visitor  Khismir from Pt England School she showed us how to use Explain everything, there are so may was that this can be used in your class.
Our school needs to invest in purchasing the latest app for it.
I enjoyed using the cutting tool to make animated cutouts
iPads Khismira’s class site
I always feel confident when I am here its when I walk out drive home I find that my head has cleared a little bit.
What I need to is go straight home reflect again on what I have learnt and how am I going to use this in my class
next week.
Set aside time to go all the DFI notes.
Digital Dig

This was hard I was getting frustrated trying to complete tasks in an allocated time, I  felt this is probably how my students are feeling when they haven’t had enough time to complete their work.

I need to go back and complete the work so I can remember all the shortcuts on a chromebook.  This will save a lot of time for students as well.

Today I made a screen castify   the voice in the castify is a bit muffled so will need to fix this.

DFI Week 4

Week 4 DFI

What I learnt this week and things I can share with other staff at school. Good video on keeping details private I watched this video about cyber safety I am going to share with my students and get them to create their own video about cyber safety.
Privacy Video

We learnt how to set up a site properly , how to choose images for our pages how to use google draw. I found it easier to insert images rather than do a google draw.

I am going to change my site next term as I now know how to make a site where all the pictures are the same size and the site is more inviting.

This is still work in progress but I can see how easy it is for children to have access to all the things they need to help them with their learning.

I am going to try a Google chat with my BT so she doesn’t have to come in on Sunday

Multi Moodal sites these sites are awesome packed with lots of resources and gives you an idea of what you need to do to make your planning and site visible and accessible to students, whanau and to other teachers so that they don't need to reinvent the wheel. By sharing with others this could cut down on planning time
Primary Examples:

Support Material

Google keep have downloaded the app on my laptop and phone have made a note to myself to show staff.

Week 3 DFI

Week 3

An awesome day today we got to meet Kent Somerville who is the Associate Principal at PT England School he showed us how to manage our tube account, how to make playlists so we could embed the videos into our planning so that children don't need to have access to youtube.  I also found out thatchildren should not have access to youtube under the age of 13.

I am going to set up a play list of maths videos for me so that I have quick access to them so I can embed them into my planning and they will always be there for me to use  when I need them.
This will help cut down my time as I will not have to search.  By sharing them with students they will have them for rewindable learning.

Kerry showed us how  to use google draw and also how to use google slides and how to use animation to make your presentations look more lively.

We were given time to create one thing:

  • Create a pick a path story
  • Create an animation
  • Digital pepeha (presentation)Ngā Oro Māori
  • Kīwaha for teachers - Create a presentation to support colleagues who do not speak Te Reo Māori

Digital pepeha guide

I chose to do a digital pepeha I have started my digital pepeha I just need to add the animation and music so it is a work in progress.
I was meant embed my pepha but I have done something wrong, so have put a link here instead.

    My Digital Pepeha

    Here is my google slide.

    Week 2 DFI

This is our second week of Digital Fluency there were a few issues today but everyone managed to stay cool and calm.
As teachers we are able to ask for help from each other just like children say they learn better from their friends.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
I learnt how to organise my google calendars, my emails so that I can get the things I need to work
on straight  away instead of going through my emails one by one and wasting time, that could other wise be used somewhere else or spending precious time getting organised for my next day of teaching.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Technology does not always play the game you want it too. Although we did not stress about the things that went wrong, it gave me a perspective on what my students feel like when they cannot get things to work for them the first time.
Even though you show your students something, like adults they need to see it a few times before they can actually do what you want them to do.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Being with a group of teachers at different levels of working with digital devices boosts your confidence because we are helping each other.

    DFI First Day

I meet some awesome people that  are sharing and gaining new learning using a digital device.

Today was the  first day of DFI I have learnt a lot today,  it has been very brain draining, but I am
already looking forward to next week.

Today I learnt how to use the speak write app which will help some of the children in my class, to get there ideas down on paper.

I learnt how to use the snippet tool which will help children to set up their  learning journey's to share with their whanau on meet the teacher night.

I learnt how to make a poster.
